A woman in Strongsville, Ohio will likely think again before she leaves her dog in the car. On April 12th police were called to a local Walmart where a woman left her dog locked in the car while she shopped. When she returned to find police at her car, she said that the dog was fine and seemed to lack remorse. Instead of writing a ticket, the officer instead asked her to sit in the car with the windows up and doors closed to see how it felt. Though she said she was fine, the officer noted that she was visibly uncomfortable.
This isn't the first time a police officer has attempted to teach negligent dog owners a lesson. A woman in New Mexico was given a citation for misdemeanor animal cruelty after she went shopping and left her dog in a hot car on a 90°F day. This chart from the America Veterinary Medical Association shows that after the ten minutes she claimed she was in the store, the car temperature would have risen to 114°F.
While the officer wrote her up, she was laughing, wasn't taking the incident seriously and repeatedly stated that it wasn't that hot. The officer, who was disturbed by her callousness, asked her to sit in the car with the windows up since she thought it was okay for the dog. The woman later reported the officer saying he was verbally abusive and demanded they sit in the car, though lapel camera footage shows that wasn't the case.
